But aside from anecdotal stories, what is the actual cost of living in Thailand? The Cost of Living in Thailand Initially I planned to cross reference some cost of living websites and provide averages, but I found them to be pretty off the mark, particularly when it came to housing.
You can use the currency convertor to convert from my figures in Baht to your native currency. Share it Tweet it Pin it Email it. The Thai Bites Newsletter. Receive my monthly roundup of posts with tips on living and traveling in Thailand. Comments Sort by : newest oldest Hi. I am a freelance software engineer. As a fellow US citizen, I understand your issue. First, you need to realize that the USA and Thailand have in place to avoid double-taxation.
It will depend on where and in what form you derive your income. You will still have to pay US taxes. More importantly, how are you going to legally work in Thailand? Do you have a work-permit and visa? If not, the whole issue of taxation become redundant. Everyone has tax liability in Thailand and it has double tax treaties with many countries, so even if you are a digital nomad working remotely in Thailand as a web developer or blogger, you will need to pay tax in Thailand if you aren't paying tax in your home country.
Income tax in Thailand is based on assessable income, which covers employment salary, professional fees, interests, dividends and capital gains on securities, any royalties, rental of property, and income from consulting or contracting.
Basically, most forms of earnings over THB, per year are taxable in Thailand. Requirements The Thai tax year runs from January 1st to December 31st. It is a taxpayer's duty to register for a tax identification number, which you should apply for at your nearest revenue office within 60 days of receiving your first salary, by submitting your passport and proof of address along with the application form.
You will then be required to file your income tax returns and pay tax to the revenue department by March 31st for each previous tax year, and there are penalties if you delay the process or make a late payment.
As a taxpayer, you must also notify the revenue department officers of any changes in circumstance, and you may be expected to provide additional documents or information at any point and comply with any summons.
If you fail to pay the total sum required, some of your assets could be seized and sold without a court decision. The money raised from the sale will pay any overdue tax arrears. Foreigners should note that when renewing work permits, they will need to show a copy of their tax submission for the previous year. Some companies handle these for their employees, so if you are working, better to ask the Thai HR on how to handle this tax, whether you will pay it or they will handle it for you.
Tax exemptions and rates in ThailandExpats earning less than , Baht are exempt from income tax. If you earn less than THB,, you are exempt from having to pay tax in Thailand. Thailand has progressive tax rates that increase with regard to earnings. Certain deductions and tax exemptions are allowed when calculating your taxable income, so it is advisable to confer with an accountant in Thailand if you aren't on PAYE with a company and are required to file your own returns.
Tax returns also need to be reported in Thai, so this will help you to overcome the language barrier. Thanks a lot Mike. This is very helpful. Of course if you are a developer requiring many overseas trips and your laptop is your office you do not need to became fiscally resident in thailand unless you spend more than days a year there. If you could arrange your work life balance to only be in thailand for about 6 months a year you might be ok.
Can you reclaim usa taxes based on travel to client sites. If so you might have found a nice life style. You may find the english language version from the thai tax office more authorative.
The best course of action is to deal with an accountant or lawyer and let them guide you. Hi Bubba, Your comment is well noted and in my experience nobody should take any blogs as definitive. As general advice I would go on to suggest the following is relevant. For clarity I am a Brit fiscally resident in France and for the next few years I will live in Thailand without being fiscally resident in Thailand or the UK so it is possible to use the system to ones own advantage by reading source documents.
I am not a specialist in international law or USA and Thai legal process. But I read source legal documents when they are important to me. I suggest that even if consulting a lawyer, accountant or tax specialist it is important to do independant research from source documents - commonly known as due dilligence.
I have over the years had dealings with these experts and because I did my own research I found that for my particular circumstances I was better informed than all of them as my focus was on me.
They usually deal in the masses and unless you are a valued high roller they do not usually have time to focus on the special circumstances of a more normal individual. For that reason I attached a link to the USA and Thailand dual taxation treaty and I suggest everybody should read the one pertinant to their fixed domicile and their expat country of choice.
They take a bit of reading but they are very clear. One might need to use an expert afterwards because, for example, one might not have experience of court procedure. But it is important to know how to guide these experts. In due course when I finally become fiscally resident in Thailand I will need a thai tax specialist simply because tax returns have to be submitted in thai script.
But I will be prepared. And if anyone reading this living in Thailand or planning a move over wants professional advice I am happy to put you in touch with my Independent Financial Advisor to help with financial planning.
I guess maybe I'm still a bit young? I read a comment here that said go for a month and see how you get on I don't know anything about thailand You have a number of hurdles to overcome. You want to live here in Thailand but to do so requires a visa. For a 32 year old the options are limited and to live here permanently rather than chancing your luck with, for example, an education visa and help from an agent each year corruption will require substantial funds and fees. You need an income.
But you cannot work without a work permit and those are not dished out willy nilly. One job you could consider is teaching English though and the support of a school would get you a visa. You have no clue about the country and its culture. Yes you should visit for an extended period but not treat it like a holiday. Rather you should choose somewhere to live and try to think like someone who is living here and have a realistic budget.
Discover if you like the culture and in villages and many towns, the poverty, the filth, the lack of facilities, the strange food and the inability to communicate 4. Finding a lady is easy but for all the wrong reasons. Look in the wrong places and you will find excitement and sex and will be expected to part with a lot of money you won't have. A lack of money will, in many cases, result a relationship ending.
Firstly I suggest you watch the hundreds of Youtube videos about thailand and relationships. Read every part of this wide ranging forum and consider if you have the strength of character and the right reasons to try.
I own flats here in the UK so I have a source of income this side that I could use to fund myself. So, couldn't I just go there and live off of the cash I bring in for myself? I figure I could get one of those visa's that allow you to stay for 6 months, then I could return to the UK for a bit and then go back, so it wouldn't be permanent, at least not at first.
I'm still learning of course and this site has helped a lot already. Something I'd like to ask is, I have high blood pressure which I have to take a pill everyday to keep under control, how could I get them in thailand?
Yes, you can live off the money you earn in the UK. You can get a prescription here from a hospital, or if it's a commonly prescribed drug you may be able to source it a local pharmacy. Though probably best to go through a doctor at a hospital and make sure you're getting what you need.
I'll bring my own adapter, use vpn and of course brush up on the language, how common is english in thailand? I could be like a retiree at I started visiting part time and gradually built up the length of stays, until I was sure I wanted to commit to a "retirement" visa.
I think your plan to go back and forth is sound. I am not sure what max length of visa you could get each time without committing a lot of funds or costing a lot - I think it would be 60 days. That would be just over 43 baht at todays rates. We can live a modest but comfortable life on that.
Much the same way as when living and working in your home country ie it does not permit a luxury life style. The big problem is getting long term visas. I am married to a Thai but if I just give her the money it is not recorded as my money which would prove my ability to support myself.
The most difficult part of that is opening a thai bank account and showing that you have a reliable income stream going into it. Many banks rejected me but at the time I was on a standard tourist visa.
At the moment we are both in France waiting for the Thailand covid situation to improve. I hope to get back in November but to go now when european weather is fine does not seem a smart idea at the because of the very restricted life that you would encounter, on the other hand there are plenty of empty rooms available to rent.
Just very few places to spend money. Except for the sun, it is not yet a good time to go especially for someone without previous experience or reliable contacts. Not got a marriage visa yet but that was because last year I had not got a bank account set up. Hopefully I am going back in November to set up a bank account and I am sure I can now get a marriage visa before christmas. The way I travelled in the past would suit you and that is to get a 3 month tourist visa.
It is only valid for 2 months then you go to the immigration office to get it extended for a third month. Then I pop back to the UK for a month and repeat the process. It would be a good way to get your feet wet without fully committing and for insurance purposes a month back in the UK is a good idea. My wife is covid stuck with me in France at the moment but I did read on the thai embassy web site that it might be able to apply for it from France.
So that is my next avenue to research. By the way if you are planning to make a future in thailand as a relatively young man I would suggest you have time to get some very basic thai language lessons under your belt and read about the culture.
You also have time to get an english teaching qualification which is the easiest way to get a job in thailand. Unless you have IT skills or an internet income then you can work from home anywhere in the world. I recommend that if you are planning a stay of years you should arrive as a cheapish charlie until you find your feet to avoid being exploted or scammed, the money you set aside in the first couple of months makes your bank account look healthy and then you can anyway splurge your holiday fund.
When we were not in this disaster of a covid I found flights to vietnam for a long weekend were a cheap and easy way to get a 1 month visa extension but flights right now are nearly impossible.
I am 62 just retired and have a pension and social security that adds up to dollars a month is that enough to live good and party I am single I want to live in chonburi or pattaya what kind of life can I have on that.
Read some regional news first.. Travel is restricted, shops are closed, entertainment is non- existent, store inventories are depleted.. Food is high cars and running cost are high eliectrisity is highest in the world. Many on the streets. What kind of life can I have on dollars a month and in the bank I am 62 I am worried that the doctors are not good enough.
You can have a great life for that monthly income and could get a retirement visa easily. Get good medical insurance and you will find the private hospitals are ok. I would say you could have a good life provided you carry decent medical insurance. In my opinion the medics in the thailand international hospitals are very good but very expensive if you are not insured.
For general scrapes, cuts and bruises etc the normal doctors and clinics are fine. Unless you are an experienced biker do not rent a motorbike or you will soon enough need medical treatment. Everything depends on what you want to do. I always calculate to bring an equivalent of baht per day and of course depends on where you end up shopping. It was good enough for me on my 10 days trip between Bangkok, Ko Samui and a short trip to Cambodia.
The street food in Bangkok is great and not expensive at all specially the fresh fruit. We visited Thailand in April this year. In 21 days we stayed in Bangkok, karon beach, patong, krabi, kho yao noi, krabi, pattaya and again in Bangkok. Some days we spent less, some days more but it all averaged out baht per day. And we were a family of 4! I think the point is you can spend as much or as little as you like We still had the most amazing time!
Can you please give us prices and names of dishes you ate. I honestly do not believe. Did you eat one a day? Oops my mistake.. I'm forgetting the exchange rate.
Wear one out grab another fresh one. Its like never changing girlfriends,a bonus. Life is good in Thai for me ahhhh. Didn't you read them?
Anonymous on Apr 20, : Can anyone provide any articles on this minimum annually salary? Anonymous on Apr 11, : Roger Ian Tonge. Furthermore no companies in Thailand are allowed to offer employment to any foreigners less than 1,, BAHT annually. Thats part of the new requirements as well. The current requirements are as follows. Many retired foreigners are leaving Thailand because they cannot meet the requirements.
The raise in requirements are due to alot of investments by the Chinese government throughout Thailand. The government will verify the minimum of , BAHT per month for anyone no matter what country you come from.
They have a prestage area where they verify the minimum funds per month required. If you don't have enough per month they'll send you on the plane out of Bangkok. The Thai government is very strict and the monthly amounts are likely to change soon to be higher. Hope my accurate information helps. Mishu on Mar 28, : Anonymous: Sorry, I meant to say 70k baht per month : Could you please let me know if this is a good deal or not?
Does the employer hate you? Mishu on Mar 24, : Hi there. I will come with my wife. Can I expect to have a normal life, and save some money as well? Sapan on Mar 12, : Hey. I just got an offer from Bangkok and it's 75k B. I am with my family. How much I can save there. Rent: thb I living near nana bts, Bangkok city center, 50sq ft studio apartment 2.
Electricity: thb 3. Water: thb 4. Public transport: I only use BTS, for work and to travel on the weekend: thb Depends where you office is. If your office is stations away, it can go to 5. Utility shopping: thb 6. Movies that's very important for me , I watch movie every weekend: thb terminal 21 has thb ticket 7. Food this includes, water, breakfast, lunch dinner, fruits etc : thb 8. Wifi: thb 9. Medical insurance: thb Total: And this doesn't include places you go on weekend, and fee and any extra shopping you do.
That's the most basic amount you might need. However, you can save a lot in transportation, by keeping your condo near your office Having meal at inexpensive places, I don't have those places near my condo : plus I love to spend money on my food.
And this also doesn't include income tax, depending on your salary slab. You can also save money by renting condo at little inexpensive places like udom suk, on nut. You can get the same condo at less So, I believe you at least need 40K, to have a normal life here and still have a little bit of savings. And here are my observations, 1. If you wat at high end places every second, you need at least 70k to make some saving 3. You can have a studio apartment in city center at 15k If you want to move to BKK and you're salary is less than 50k, you got to live little strictly to make Saving but if you can think twice before doing shopping, then you can have a comfortable life Ngoc on Feb 03, : I got an offer of BHT monthly before deduction and all the living expense I have to pay myself.
Will that be enough for the basic single life? Anonymous on Jan 30, : Lived in Thailand for 12 years. The prices mostly reflected in the comments are if you want to live like a rich farang. There are many, many nice places to live that cost at most 30k baht month. If you like go to bar every night or go out to another city every weekend, I guess it is not enough. Will that be enough? And what kind of life some expat can live this amount?
Anonymous on Sep 04, : A salary offered to you up to 40, baht a month in Thailand is just to get by. What does it exactly mean? You won't be able to save money. You can't afford trips in Thailand. You can't pay hospital bills with the basic medical insurance that Thai employers might offer. You can't afford a plane ticket to fly back home.
Don't compare Thai people's income with yours. That is a trap employers use to lure foreign employees. A western person can't live like an office worker in Thailand who makes 15, baht a month.
Thai people don't have your expenses like visa fees, traveling to the west, hospital bills like yours, eating western food, expensive local trips, and FYI most Thais don't have savings. But what is the point in living in Thailand when they live like a beach bum? Anonymous on Aug 03, : The price of condo in the city is now between , baht, baht per square meter.
The price is increasing gradually. Daily or weekly renting out is prohibited by law. A local agent is not necessary, if you can handle the paperwork by yourself. Anonymous on Jun 22, : Apartment in the city in Bangkok, its price per squate meter is ,, baht.
Anonymous on May 04, : Thailand is like a begger country forcing traveller passing through Thailand in transit to apply for a visa on arrival which costs a whooping bath which can be used to purchase 4 flight ticket of going from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. Transit traveller like my 70 years old mum just need to stay at the Bangkok airport just for 3 hours to join her connecting flight but the begger staff at the airport didn't allow her where she was to join her connecting flight even after a heated argument and eventually shamelessly forced her out of the immigration to apply for a ripoff visa on arrival of bath unnecessarily and she entered the immigration immediately again to join her connecting flight.
She was very tired and was almost late for her connecting flight as applying the ripoff visa wasted a lot of her time as well. So easily the Bangkok airport ripped my mum off baths as well as her energy just to contribute the ripoff visa fee to Thailand just for being in transit for 3 hours even with already arranged confirmed connecting flight to her final destination.
My mum travelled all over the world but this is the first time being ripped off deliberately by Thailand airport and she has never encountered such a dishonest country like Thailand throughout her whole life.
Right now my mum is afraid to travel to the ripoff land Thailand. Visa fee should not be regarded as a big business to the extent of not willing to offer visa waiver to qualified region like Taiwan, etc. Money first is the current wrong policy instead of the people first policy in the previous democracy government. Reasons behind the purchase is mostly as an investment property and my family and I visit Bangkok twice a year and we always stay in Makkasan area with access to shopping and plenty of street food.
Whenever we're not using the apartment I want it to be rented out. I was told that renting out on a daily basis should be done in self while renting out on the long term will be done by an agent. If I get help form a local and rent the place what would be the appropriate salary for them??
Also, what would be the approximate rate for 2 bed 2 bath condo say at Manhattan Chidlom or Platinum Condo??
