I have designed many architectural features in our home but are usually to time consuming for me to do myself so we have a professional carpenter follow my plans and then install the work.
Any painting that has to done in the home we do ourselves. As far as flooring we will hire professionals to install that as well. As far as drapes and pillows etc. In fact we have been looking for a leopard print that would suit the decor in our bedroom but we couldn't find anything, but just the other day my better half found a pullover top done in a soft gold and off white leopard print that is going to be perfect for the room.

We are in final stages of new construction. Think we considered every single thing mentioned in comments, from stained concrete to marmoleum. It gives us the contemporary look we want, the comfort we need, and sound absorption. We've had cork before and loved it. We're also installing cork underlayment which some say we don't need to ramp up those desirable qualities another notch. We have spent more time on our flooring selection than any other detail. That said I can see the need to somehow bring everything in the room together. I might be tempted to take out the right hand set of panels from the fireplace to create a bit of symmetry. And I would definitely find something less modern to house the entertainment system.
And then I might go absolutely bat-spit crazy and hire a decorative painter to do a little something in the two panels right over the hearth behind the clock, as it is. BTW, I think I have that clock. Maybe two primitive portraits of you and your loved one, glaring at each other across the mantel in old Colonial style You've got a lovely, interesting house!
